Island Pond, Vermont Hotels

Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, about an hour drive from Montpelier, includes more than 2,000 square miles of land in the northeastern part of the state. Home to more than 120,000 acres of state and federal forest lands and parks and nearly 4,000 miles of rivers and streams, the Northeast Kingdom attracts outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country. The small town of Island Pond draw kayakers, hikers, mountain bikers, fly fishers, skiers, snow mobilers and nature lovers year round.
  1. Clyde River Hotel

    • The Clyde River Hotel, in downtown Island Pond, is 100 feet from the pond and within a five-minute walk of Friendly Pizza Parlor, Jennifer's Restaurant, Pond's Edge Pub and Ted's Market. In summer, visitors can lounge on a sandy beach at Brighton State Park, three miles away. In winter, they can hit the slopes at Burke Mountain Resort, a ½-hour drive. All rooms at the hotel include free wireless Internet and a refrigerator. A limited number of two-room efficiency suites include kitchens. The Grand Room sleeps up to 10 and has two full beds and five twins, a kitchen and living room.

    The Avalon Bed and Breakfast

    • The Avalon Bed and Breakfast is a two-minute drive north of downtown Island Pond. Amenities include cable TV in all rooms. The Avalon has single and double rooms with shared baths, a large four-person suite with a private bath and living room, and the Secret Room Suite, which sleeps six and has a private bath. Lyndonville, a 30-minute drive from the Avalon, has the Antiques & Emporium and Route 5 Antiques & Collectibles. Onsite activities at the Avalon include snowmobile tours and an outdoor hot tub. The Avalon has a shared kitchen that guests can use to prepare food. Lago Trattoria, an Italian restaurant in Newport, and The Inn at Mountain View Creamery, a Mediterranean restaurant in East Burke, are both a ½-hour drive away.

    Moose Wallow Lodge

    • Moose Wallow Lodge is on 350 private acres. This cedar-decorated lodge has three double-occupancy rooms with satellite TVs. The rooms share two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a large front porch. Moose Wallow draws kayak enthusiasts -- Echo Lake, Seymour Lake and Lake Salem are all within a ½-hour drive north. Lake Willoughby, within the 8,000 acres of Willoughby State Forest, is 14 miles south. The Pub Outback or River Garden Café, 30 minutes north of East Burke, offers lunch and dinner. Friendly Pizza Parlor, 10 minutes from the lodge in downtown Island Pond, delivers.

    The Lakefront Inn and Motel

    • The Lakefront Inn and Motel offers one, two and three bedroom suites -- some with fireplaces -- in its main building and one- and two-bedroom rooms with kitchens in the lakefront building. The inn has a multi-bay, heated garage where guests can make repairs to snowmobiles -- the inn is near the Northeast Kingdoms 5,000-plus miles of trails. The Lakefront Deli, adjacent to the inn, provides breakfast and lunch. The Lakefront Express Mart is a gas station with a small grocery store. Jay Peak Resort, one-hour west by car, attracts skiers and snowboarders to its trails in winter, golfers to its 18-hole course in summer. Jay Peak plans to open a water park in 2011. In Newport, on the shores of Lake Memphremagog, East Side Restaurant & Pub offers dinner.
