The Chicago Rockford International Airport is located approximately 85 miles northwest of Chicago and is known in the travel industry by its three-letter code RFD. The airport began operations as an Army Calvary Camp during World War I and was named Camp Grant. In World War II the airport transitioned into a training facility and prisoner of war camp until 1946 when it began operating as the Greater Rockford Airport.
