If you are getting ready to hit the road for a family vacation to Highlands, N.C. and your family includes a dog or cat, there is good news. Many lodging establishments in the area now accept pets, sometimes with a few special rules or charges. A little research before hitting the road can make the vacation fun and stress-free for the whole family, including the four-legged members. These are some establishments that are happy to accept your pet.
Two units in the Mountain Brook Suites are pet-friendly. The establishment charges $35 per night for what it calls "canine kids." Guests will get a pet agreement via email, along with a reservation confirmation letter. Guests must sign the agreement and return it before their trip or bring it with them the day they check in. The six-unit Mountain Brook Suites is operated by the historic Highlands Inn. Each unit features a living room with a fireplace, dining and kitchen areas and a bathroom with a whirlpool and shower.

Some of the double rooms of the rustic Mountain High Lodge have been designated as pet-friendly. You will need to contact the lodge to determine if the rooms will be available while you are in town. All rooms include refrigerators and coffeemakers. The double rooms include two double beds, two arm chairs, a desk with chair and television. The lodge is within walking distance of the shops in town.

The Skyline Lodge and Restaurant is located three miles from Highlands. It is built on top of Flat Mountain, just a short distance from the Nantahala National Forest. Some rooms are designated for pets, but you must ask about their availability when calling for reservations. Pets are not allowed in the lodge's rental cabins.

Established in 1939 as Mitchell's Motel, the lodge has been family-run for three generations. The lodge's rooms and four cottages accept pets and feature a free continental breakfast, cable television, coffeemakers and use of a pavilion overlooking a lake. The cottages include additional features such as gas log fireplaces, a kitchen and private deck.
