Pet-Friendly Resorts Near Lake Winnibigoshish, Minnesota

Lake Winnibigoshish, the fifth largest lake in Minnesota, was “formed by a huge ice block left behind by a receding glacier," according to the St. Paul, Minnesota U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. The lake covers 67,000 acres and has 141 miles of shoreline. Lake Winnibigoshish is a popular vacation spot for nature lovers, families and people who love fishing. Many area resorts welcome pets as long as guests keep them from disturbing local wildlife and other visitors.

    • McArdle’s Resort is located on the shores of Lake Winnibigoshish near Bena, MN in the heart of the Minnesota Northwoods. This resort has been popular with fishermen and their families since the 1920s. From early spring through late fall, guests can stay in one of 23 comfortable cabins that range from deluxe to modern. The cabins are fully furnished with all necessary amenities and are situated in a beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Winnibigoshish, affectionately known as Lake Winnie.

      Guests may also choose to stay in the resort’s campground, which has five RV campsites with full hook-ups and shower facilities. McArdle's Resort offers eight affordable winterized cabins and easy access to Lake Winnie in the winter, when ice fishing is a popular activity.

      No pets are allowed in the cabins during the winter season. However, pets are allowed in designated cabins and the campground during spring, summer and fall. They must be leashed at all times and never left unattended. Pet owners must clean up after their pets and take responsibility for all pet actions. As of 2010, the charge per pet is $9 per day or $60 per week.

    Little Winnie Resort

    • Little Winnie Resort is open year-round. The resort is located on 83 acres in a secluded location in north central Minnesota, surrounded by thousands of acres of the Chippewa National Forest. Little Winnie Resort is a half-mile from Lake Winnibigoshish and has direct access to Little Winnibigoshish Lake, which is described in the Deer River, Minnesota Community Guide as a “pristine lake left untouched by development.”

      Guests staying at Little Winnie Resort enjoy the pleasant family atmosphere, world-class fishing, comfortable cabins, wildlife viewing, and activities and attractions for people of all ages. The resort has 11 clean, comfortable cabins featuring amenities such as microwaves, ceiling fans, cable televisions, air conditioning and wireless Internet. The family-friendly lodge has a snack bar, bait and tackle, gifts and souvenirs, and a game room. Little Winnie Resort’s kid-friendly features include a heated swimming pool and a new playground.

      Pets are allowed in the cabins for a per pet fee of $15 a day or $75, as of summer 2010. The per pet fee for the Antler Lodge is $25 per day or $125 per week. Pets may not be left unattended, must be kept on leash and always cleaned up after. Pet owners are responsible for any damages caused by their pets and for any accidents or incidents with people or other dogs. Any loss, damage or extensive cleaning will be charged to the guest. Cats are not allowed at the resort.

    Gus' Place Resort

    • Gus’ Place is a Winnibigoshish resort with many amenities and a wide variety of things to do both on the water and off. The resort has a large, sandy swimming beach where you and your family can build sandcastles, relax on a chaise lounge or lie out on a beach towel in the warm sun. The resort provides kayaks and paddle boats. Fishing is encouraged right off the resort's docks, where you can catch walleye, bass, northern pike, crappie, perch and panfish. Minnesota ice fishing at Gus' Place Resort brings guests back year after year.

      Gus’ Place has a new four-hole golf course, a volleyball area, room to play croquet, a basketball hoop, tetherball and horseshoe pits. For children, the resort offers a swing set, teeter-totter and large sandbox, and the lodge has pinball machines, video games and a pool table. There are miles of hiking, biking and ATV trails right outside the resort.

      The resort allows dogs, but they must be approved ahead of time and current on all vaccinations. Guests must clean up after their dogs, both outdoors and indoors. Dogs left alone must be kenneled or tied safely outside, and leashed when walked outdoors. A fee of $7.50 per day and $50 per week per dog is required, as of 2010. Guests are financially responsible for any damages caused by their pets.
