According to the Cyprus Tourism Organization, Cyprus is described as the "year-round island." It's where the East meets the West and there's dynamic geography ranging from inland mountains to surrounding beaches. If you're on a budget while on holiday in Cyprus, there's plenty to do at this tourist island that draws in an average of 2.4 million visitors a year.
Every year Cyprus hosts what it calls the Lemesos Wine Festival. This event started in 1961 and is usually held the last week of August. Inspired by the ancient festivals dedicated to the God of Wine (Dionysus) and the Goddess of Beauty and Love (Aphrodite), it also includes a variety of performances from local and international artistic groups. If you're on a budget, there is a small entrance fee. Once inside, all the wine is absolutely free.
The Republic of Cyprus organizes a free-for-spectators volleyball tournament called the CEV Challenger Cyprus. Athletes from all around the world attend every year to compete. But the volleyball is only part of it as there is ample entertainment in the form of a DJ, Announcer, beach parties and cheerleaders from Spain.
Also, football matches are a great way to enjoy yourself and immerse yourself in the soccer-loving culture of the Mediterranean. If you don't enjoy football, Cyprus has federations and leagues for rugby, tennis, basketball and even cricket.
In North Cyprus, there is a beautiful U-shaped bay called the Old Harbour in Kyrenia. If you want to splurge, you can go to the harbor during the day and book a diving trip, a para sailing experience, or a cruise out to nearby Escape and Turtle beaches.
If you're a little more adventurous (and on a budget!) there's plenty of medieval castles to explore. North Cyprus is home to St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara castles, all built in the Middle Ages.
