Bristol straddles the border between Tennessee and Virginia, in the heart of Appalachia. Bristol was declared the "Birthplace of Country Music" by the U.S. Congress for early recordings of the Carter Family and Jimmy Rogers that took place there, according to the town's official website. Primarily a residential town, Bristol nonetheless has several attractions that draw visitors from across the region.
  1. Bristol Mall

    • Bristol Mall is the only shopping complex in the Bristol area. Opened in the 1970s, the mall was renovated in 1999 and now has 486,169-square-feet of shopping, according to the Bristol Mall website. The mall is anchored by three large department stores: Belks, Sears and JCPenney, as well as over 50 stores with local, regional and national chains represented. There are nine food service establishments in the mall food-court, including Chick-Fil-A and McDonald's. The two-story structure is located two miles from downtown Bristol, Tennessee.

    Bristol Caverns

    • The vaulted chambers, stalactites and underground river of Bristol Caverns were carved between 200 and 400 million years ago, according to the Bristol Caverns website. Once used as an escape route by the Cherokee Indians, the cavern has a long history of human occupation. Visitors today can explore the caves and dramatic rock formations along paved and well-lighted walkways with a knowledgeable guide. The caverns are open year-round with the exception of Christmas, New Year's Day, Easter Sunday and Thanksgiving. Private tours are available, as are group tour discounts. Photography is allowed within the caves.

    Bristol Motor Speedway

    • Bristol Motor Speedway is the largest attraction in Bristol, Tennessee. Construction began in 1960 and took one year to complete, with the first NASCAR race held on July 30, 1961. Despite its relatively small size, Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the most popular NASCAR racetracks due to its many unusual features, such as its short, highly banked racetrack and steep amphitheater seats. The speedway can seat 160,000 spectators, according to NASCAR statistics. Currently the speedway hosts all levels of NASCAR racing, including Sprint Cup and Nationwide series.
