Portage County is situated in northeast Ohio's recreational heartland. Located in the Akron metro area, Portage County has a rural, small-town environment and is home to Kent State University. Portage County is also home to many fun things to do, as it has an extensive parks system and plenty of tourist attractions.
  1. Get Wet at Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom

    • Visit Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom and enjoy the park's six main attractions. Play in the activity pool with basketball hoops. Enjoy interactive water sprays and climbable floatables in Coral Cove. Spiral down a 253-feet-long waterslide at speeds of up to 24 mph on a raft in Liquid Lightning. Go tubing down a 1,100-feet-long flowing river in Riptide Run. Careen down 14 different waterslides in Splash Landing and Thunder Falls. Swim in Tidal Wave Bay, a 390,000-gallon, Caribbean-themed pool with waves and geysers. The park is open daily, May through September, and admission fees apply.

    Take a "Taste of Portage" Tour

    • Begin your self-lead tour with a delicious meal in Mangiamo!, a casual Italian restaurant with an outdoor courtyard. Next, head over to the Viking Vineyards & Winery, which is open year-round. Have wine in the cozy tasting room while enjoying views of the lake, or relax in the outdoor seating area on the deck along the lake. Finally, at Mike's Place, a restaurant with rules such as "Thou shalt control thy children or we will provide duct tape," sample local and regional microbrews. Eat the 40-oz. burger, One Big Momma, or try the award-winning St. Louis-style BBQ ribs, all while listening to live music.

    Play in Area Parks

    • The Portage Park District has a total of 10 parks, ranging from 22 acres to 175 acres, with trails as long as seven miles. Hike, bike, cross-country ski, go sledding and/or bird watching in Towner's Woods, the largest of the parks. You can even hold your wedding in the wedding gazebo. Go horseback riding, hike, bike and cross-country ski on Headwaters Trail. The Portage Hike and Bike Trail and Dix Park are two other parks where you can hike, bike and cross-country ski. Participate in geocaching and volunteer programs in Towner's Woods and Gray Birch Bog.
