Ocala, Florida Tourist Attractions

The city of Ocala is in Florida's Marion County, is known as the "Horse Capital of the World" with the most horses and ponies in residence in the country, according to the Ocala/Marion Visitors and Convention Bureau. Ocala--located in the central part of the state--features a tour of a race horse farm. It also has a drag racing museum and a national forest full of outdoor activities. (CE: reference 1)
  1. Chasin' a Dream Farm

    • Chasin' a Dream Farm is a working farm for thoroughbred breeding and training. Visitors can take a two-hour tour that gives insight into the horse side of the horse racing industry. You'll learn about the mating process, sires, conformation and pedigree and history of the horses. Tour guides will take you around the farm, including an introduction to each mare and foal (a horse that's a year or younger). Pony rides are available.     Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing

    • The Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing celebrates a different type of horse power. Garlits is a pioneer of the sport and won 144 national events in his career that started in 1950. The museum honors Garlits' achievements and tells about the history of drag racing. It includes cars, trophies, helmets, pictures and other drag racing memorabilia. The venue also has two hall of fame museums; the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and the Super Stock Magazine's Drag Racing Hall of Fame.     Ocala National Forest

    • The Ocala National Forest has four recreation areas around natural springs. People can go bicycling, boating, camping, canoeing, fishing, ride four-wheelers, hiking, horseback riding, swimming and snorkeling. The forest also contains four Congress-designated wilderness areas that have remote sections in their natural conditions. The areas are good for camping, canoeing and hiking. The novel "The Yearling" by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings featured the Juniper Prairie Wilderness area. "The Yearling", a movie starring Gregory Peck, was filmed in the area.
