Lake Okeechobee is 730 square miles and features an abundance of fresh water fishing and water sport opportunities. The lake is surrounded by the Florida National Scenic Trail. The trail sits atop the Herbert Hoover Dike and surrounds the lake to provide flood protection. The lake and trail provide wildlife views including a variety of birds. Egrets, herons, and wintering waterfowl are all available for the bird lover.
This preserve showcases a variety of endangered plants and animals. The five-mile drive into the park highlights one of the largest stretches of Florida's dry prairie. The park offers birding opportunities of the sandhill crane and endangered grasshopper sparrow. More than 100 miles of dirt roads allows recreational activities for bikers, hikers, and equestrians. Buggy tours are led by park rangers. Overnight stays are available via campgrounds and equestrian facilities.
