The bathhouse opened in 1922 and ceased operation in 1971. After 20 years of vacancy, it reopened as the Aquatorium that is known today, a site purposed for viewing the waters of Lake Michigan. After more than 10 years of renovation, this stunning piece of architecture and the beautiful gardens that surround it serve as an aquatorium as well as a memorial to Octave Chanute, the French-born pilot who maneuvered the world's first aeronautically designed hang-glider from a dune just west of the building in 1896.
