How to Translate Swahili Online

Swahili is a widely spoken language in Eastern Africa. It is a common first language for Kenyans, Ugandans, and Tanzanians, and a second language for many others. (reference 1) It has long been a language of commerce and trade, so many businessmen who work in that part of the world also speak it. With elements of Arabic and local languages, Swahili isn't the easiest language for English-speakers to learn. Instead of studying it or paying a professional translator, it is possible to translate Swahili text into English online for free. The results won't be grammatically perfect, but will be understandable.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your web browser and navigate it to a free translation website such as Google Translate, Translation Services, or All Translation. (see resources)

    • 2

Click on the pull-down menu next to "From" and choose "Swahili" from the list of languages there to set the language in Google Translate. In both Translation Services and All Translation, there are two pull-down menus next to each other. Choose from the one on the left to set the "From" language to Swahili.

    • 3

Click on the pull-down menu next to the "To" field and select "English" in Google Translate. In All Translation and Translation Services, select "English" from the drop-down menu on the right.

    • 4

Type the Swahili text into the "From" field in Google Translate, or copy and paste it in from another document or webpage. In All Translation, the "From" field is the box on the top of the two dialog boxes, while on Translation Services' page it is the box on the left.

    • 5

Click "Translate" in Google Translate or All Translation. Click on the logo with a circular arrow on it in Translation Services. The English translation of the Swahili text will appear in the blank dialog box. You can then copy and paste the text into other documents. Google Translate can also translate whole websites; just enter the website address instead of text into the "From" field.
