The first thing taught in collapsible baton training is where to stand, about half a step outside your baton's range. This distance allows you to maximize the baton's strength through momentum.
Next, you will learn where to hit through lectures and demonstrations. Since this is a self-defense course, you will learn how to disarm the attacker and end the fight without killing him, so your first strike point will be his weapon. Next, you'll want to hit a bony area such as his collarbone or knee to disable him without killing him. This is the most effective use of the baton.
Finally, you will take part in drills that teach you how to hit. The two major hits are slashes, which are up-and-down hits that use momentum in their power, and jabs, which are pokes that have less power. Jabs are more useful in smaller areas.
