How to Process Passport Photos

All passport photographs must configure to specific settings. If the images fail to meet all of these specifications the images are unable to be used on your passport. Because of this, it is always a good idea to have the passport photos created by a professional. Once you have the passport photos, you must process the information so it is printed in your national passport document.

Obtain your passport photos. It is possible to do this at most photo labs and even the post office. Do not take these photographs at home as it is highly unlikely you have the correct backdrop, lighting and camera to create the document. Some specifications for your photograph include no facial coverings, no hats (unless for religious purposes), no glasses and a white background must be used. The photograph must include the tops of the shoulders up to the top of the head. Some countries do not allow you to smile in the photograph as it wrinkles and slightly distorts your face (your photographer will inform you if you can't smile).

Take your passport photos and any current passport to the post office. In order to obtain a new passport, you need to release your current document.

    • 3

Pick up the passport document form from the post office and fill it out. You also need a check for the passport amount. The amount will vary depending on whether you have a current passport, your age, the shipping and if you need to expedite the passport.

Give your passport, photos, completed document and check to the post office. The post office then submits your passport information and processes the photographs. In several weeks, you receive the processed photograph back, printed in your passport.
