How to Strap a Row Boat to a Car Rack

If you are about to embark on a boating or fishing trip in your row boat but don't have a truck and trailer to get the boat to the water, you can still get it there with relative ease. You can tie it to the car rack on the top of your car. If you don't have a car rack, you can purchase padding that adorns the sides of the boat in order to prevent your car from being damaged.

Place the boat upside-down on the top of the car. Be certain that it is balanced on the car so you can still have an unobstructed view from the front windshield.

    • 2

Place a strap over the boat from one rail of the car rack to the other at the front of the car rack. Tighten the strap lightly so you still have a little play in the strap. Place another strap at the back of the car rack and over the boat. Remove the slack from this strap as well.

    • 3

Tie one end of the third strap to the fastening loop at the front of the boat. Tie the other end of the strap to the chassis at the front of your car. Take out the slack, but do not tighten this one.

    • 4

Tie the fourth strap to the back of the boat and the rear end of the car. If you have a ball hitch, you can attach the strap to that. If you don't, you can attach the strap to the car's chassis. Secure this strap tightly. This will also tighten the front strap and help prevent the strong air currents created while driving from not altering the positioning of the boat.

Tighten the side straps so the boat is secure. Be sure the end straps are still tight after you tightened the side straps.
