Many all-inclusive vacations take place in warm weather destinations. Casual clothing is the norm, although some upscale resorts specify “resort casual.” In general, this is interpreted as polo shirts, Dockers-style pants or shorts, sundresses and other lightweight clothing. Many vacationers like to dress up slightly for dinner and evening activities. Bring at least two swimsuits to ensure that one is dry when you need it. A light sweater or jacket is always a good choice, as some buildings are air-conditioned too cold.
If you are traveling to a ski resort or other cold weather location, plan to dress in layers. Choose an insulated inner layer such as silk or a high-tech blend. Your outermost layer should be waterproof and wind resistant. Middle layers might include a sweatshirt, jacket or light fleece.
Most all inclusive resorts provide hotel-size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and other essentials, but many travelers prefer to bring their own. Remember that containers over three ounces in size must be packed in your checked luggage. Products are often sold in the resort gift shop, but the selection may be limited and the prices high. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, even if you are visiting a cold-weather location.
Traveling can be tough on the immune system, increasing your chances of developing a minor illness. Bring your favorite over-the-counter remedies for coughs, colds, diarrhea and other ailments. Carry a few bandages and a small tube of antibiotic ointment as well. If you take prescription medications, bring enough for the entire trip in the original pharmacy bottles. Carry a copy of your prescription in case you need an emergency refill. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring a spare pair.
Although most all-inclusive resorts provide a seemingly endless schedule of activities, you might want to leave the resort from time to time and visit the local area. Sightseeing and adventure tours outside the resort are generally not included in the package price. If you want to try some outside restaurants, you will need to pay separately for those as well.
If you plan to golf, play tennis, snorkel, dive or participate in other sports at the resort, equipment may be provided. Check with your specific resort for details. Nonetheless, many enthusiasts prefer to bring their own equipment. If you are flying to your destination, check with your airline to determine if there are additional charges.
