A Mexican vacation is not a high-fashion event. Bring clothes that are light-weight and breathable, such as linen slacks and silk or cotton shirts. A durable sundress will go from the beach to lunch. A simple sarong can function as a towel, laundry bag and beach cover-up. If you're staying at a resort or cruising, bring one outfit appropriate for a formal dinner in a warm climate.
Shoes should be flat sandals or sneakers. Hiking sandals will work well on the beach and will keep you cool and protected.
Tip: Pack only two or three colors that mix and match.
As popular, close and welcoming as Mexico is, remember that it is a foreign country with different cultural norms and infrastructure.
Modesty is appreciated by this largely Catholic country. Bring swimsuits, shorts and skirts that you'd wear in front of your grandmother, and leave the thong at home.
Bring all of your medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. Pack life-saving treatment such as an epi-pen if you have severe allergies. If you're backpacking, bring a water purification system.
If yo have a medical condition or think you might encounter problems, invest in travel insurance through a reputable company, such as Medex or AAA. Read the fine print to know what is covered.
Tip: Keep your passport in the hotel safe and your money in a hidden pocket under your clothes. Leave copies of your passport with family at home.
Due to the hot and humid weather, plan on changing your intimate garments often. Bring socks and undergarments made of fast-drying antimicrobial materials.
Bring a long-sleeved lightweight shirt or jacket and mosquito repellent. If you've planned rain forest outings, bring sturdy, waterproof closed-toed shoes with high-traction soles.
Hot, rainy weather is death to electronics. Bring waterproof electronics bags or insulated lunch bags for storing your cell phone, e-book reader, laptop or camera. For snorkeling or scuba diving, invest in a shockproof, waterproof camera or case.
Tip: Jeans are heavy and bulky, and in humid weather can stick uncomfortably.
Leave at home anything you can; your shoulders will thank you when you're lugging your suitcase across the airport. If you forget something, you can usually replace it in Mexico, often inexpensively.
Bring only one week's clothes regardless of your vacation length. Your hotel or guest house can do laundry.
The most important thing to bring with you is your sense of humor and adventure. A smile is always welcome.
