What to Bring to Band Camp

Band camp is generally held in August before school begins for the year. Some schools have camp at their facility with students arriving in the morning and ending practice in the early evening. Other schools have students go to an actual overnight camp. Regardless of which avenue your school takes, you must bring some essential items to band camp to ensure comfort and success.
  1. Clothing

    • While at band camp, you will most likely experience hot days, cool nights and the possibility of rain. Unless the weather is severe, you will be out on the field practicing. Wear a hat or visor to keep your head cool and your face protected. Sunglasses provide further protection, especially when you have to turn your head up and face the sun's direct rays. Shorts, T-shirt and socks and sneakers are adequate for practice during the day. Pack pants and sweatshirts for those cool nights. A swimsuit is optional in case the camp has a lake or pool nearby.

    Personal Care Items

    • You will be out practicing in an open field for hours on end, during the hottest part of the day. Bring lots of sunscreen. Bug spray keeps the bugs at bay and can increase your comfort. A water bottle is essential to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Bring a backpack to hold your music, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and snacks, as you most likely won't be leaving the field during breaks. A pillow and sleeping bag are needed for cabin stays. A small fan will help as well as change for the vending machine.

    Music

    • Bring any music that you have been sent before band camp. You should be practicing before band camp begins. Generally, students have the music memorized before camp begins. They learn the choreographed routine at band camp. If for some reason you did not receive the music or failed to realize you were supposed to memorize it, then explain that to your band director, and get to work immediately to catch up with the rest of the band.

    Considerations

    • Take care of yourself and put your best foot forward. Eat breakfast and stay hydrated. This will also cut down on heat-related illnesses. Be on time and follow the directions of your band director. You can learn a great deal by observing band members who were there last year. Eat lunch on your break. Remember to get a good night's sleep.
