Do not bring an umbrella. Though Seattle is infamous for rain, the actual average rainfall is lower than in many cities. That's because, while it does rain often, it mostly rains very lightly and sparsely. In fact, unless it is mid-winter and you have a serious aversion to getting wet or you are planning on hiking in the Cascades, don't bother with a raincoat either.

Pack according to the season. The lowest average temperature in Seattle is about 40 degrees F in January and February--fairly mild. A wool or heavy fleece coat or, better yet, lots of layers will be favorable for winter months. In the summer, you will need a light sweater for cooler evenings. Whatever you do, do not bring a down coat to Seattle in the rainy dark months of winter unless you want to know what it feels like to be a wet duck.

Don't bring a ball gown.Seattle is a casual city. Even the most formal event is done with casual flair. There is almost an art to dressed-up casual or dressed-down formal. If you are there for business, consider business casual. Jeans are appropriate almost everywhere.

Flaunt your personal style with confidence. Feel free to wear your most feel-good and fashion-forward outfits while shopping downtown. Stick to your own unique look, and you will fit in great on Capitol Hill or in the University District. Wear your fleece vest and cross trainers if you plan to spend time in Greenlake. Your wrap skirts and ethnic tunics might fare best in Ravenna or Freemont.

Bring your most comfortable walking shoes, the ones that can stand to stomp down concrete sidewalks for hours and still hold up at the bar for happy hour. Your feet will thank you.
