How to Get Rid of a Smell in Luggage

To prepare for a trip, you fold and pack your clothing carefully into your luggage. You take care to prevent any damage to your personal items. Unfortunately, once it is checked at the airport, placed on a bus or set on the floor at your hotel, your case is exposed to many elements. Luggage may be carried through the rain, stained by spilled food or exposed to mildew. The damage can result in odors that need to be eliminated when you return home.

      First, vacuum your luggage.

      Vacuum the exterior of your luggage with your brush attachment. Open the case and vacuum the surface with the brush attachment. Remove the brush and attach the nozzle to your vacuum and suction all dust and dirt that may have collected in crevices, seams and corners. Thoroughly vacuum inside the zippered compartments and pockets with the nozzle attachment. Debris can cause odors.

      Spot clean any stains with white vinegar on a clean cloth. If the vinegar is not effective, purchase a commercial spot cleaner.

      Natural sunlight will help neutralize ordoers.

      Place the opened suitcase outdoors in bright sunlight. This will dry any remaining moisture from your suitcase. If there is a musty odor, the fresh air and sunlight will act as a natural deodorizer.

      Place 3 tbsp. of baking soda in a small dish. Add a few drops of lavender oil. Place the dish inside your suitcase and close the case. Odors will be absorbed by the mixture. Remove the dish after a few days.

      Purchase aquarium charcoal from your local pet store. Place it in a plastic container. Punch holes in the lid and snap it onto the container. Set the container inside your closed luggage and allow it to absorb odors for several days. Remove the container and charcoal.

      Place a few fabric softener sheets inside your suitcase. Tuck them into all of the pockets and zippered compartments. Close the case and allow it to sit for several days before removing the sheets.
