How to Get Rid of Tent Mold

Camping can be a fun experience--until mold finds its way into the picture. Molds are multi-celled fungi that thrive in moist, nutrient-rich conditions. They assist in breaking down organisms and materials as a part of the decaying process. Although molds are quite helpful in the natural life cycle, they are less than desirable when you discover them making a friendly attempt to break down your tent while you're still using it. Mold removal is required in order to preserve the strength of your tent and extend its life. A presence of large gray patches with defined edges indicates mold.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large pail with water. Temperature is not important.

    • 2

Pour bleach into the water, using the manufacturer's recommended water-to-bleach ratio.

    • 3

Place the canvas fabric of the tent in the bleach water, taking care to soak and wet all areas of the tent.

    • 4

Soak the canvas tent for up to four hours to ensure the bleach water has saturated throughout the material and killed the mold spores. This should also kill production of new mold growth in process.

    • 5

Dump the bleach water and rinse the tent with several buckets of fresh water to remove the bleach solution.

    • 6

Hang the tent. Allow the tent to dry completely over a period of several hours. It is ready for use once dry.
