Determine whether or not you can renew your passport by mail by using the following guidelines. If you already have a passport that isn't damaged, that was received within the past 15 years, and you were at least 16-years-old when the passport was issued and you still have the same name as in the passport (or can document a legal name change) then you are eligible to renew your passport by mail.
Renew your U.S. passport by mail. Download and complete Form DS-82, available on the U.S. Department of State website.
Include your most recent passport, two identical passport photos, and a $75 fee payable to the U.S. Department of State along with your completed DS-82 renewal application form. Request and pay the fee for expedited service if you need your passport sooner than the standard processing time.
Prove a legal name change to change your name on your new passport. Include a certified copy of a legal document that specifies your name change. Acceptable documents include marriage certificates, divorce decrees, adoption decrees, or court orders. No photocopies will be accepted.
Mail all documents and fees in a padded envelope to the address listed on your DS-82 form.
Apply in person for a U.S. passport renewal. If you failed to meet the requirements to renew your passport by mail you can make an appointment at a U.S. passport agency or apply at one of over 9,000 public places that accept passport applications. You can find the location of your nearest passport agency or acceptance place online on the U.S. Department of State website.
Reapply to renew your U.S. visa. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will review your application and decide whether or not to extend or reissue your visa.
