ATV Trails Near Cortez Colorado

Here is where Four Corners red rock country snuggles against the west slope of the Rocky Mountains. It's the place the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) open designated ATV trails near Cortez, Colorado for riding the distinctly different landscapes. Plateau terrain and weathered sandstone are managed by the BLM. The Forest Service administers the San Juan Mountains.
  1. Rincon Canyon Recreation Area, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument (BLM)

    • Ride through nearly 25,000 acres of red rock country canyons and mesas in the Rincon Canyon Recreation Area. The ATV staging area is located on the south side of County Road G about 24 miles west of U.S. 160 from Cortez Municipal Airport. Trails straddle both sides of the Colorado and Utah state line. Trails are marked and leaving the designated roads is prohibited in the National Monument.

Transfer Recreation Area, San Juan National Forest (USFS)

    • A 31-mile ride up County Road 42 from Mancos, the Transfer Recreation Area campground is the gateway to eight ATV trails. Chicken Creek #615, Rim, Transfer, Big Al and West Mancos #621 all connect at the campground. Another mile from the County Road 42, the road splits into two trails, one to Haycamp Mesa and the other to Gold Run Trail. The Gold Run route connects to the Aspen Loop ATV Trail making a 15-mile circle. The Haycamp route crosses Morrison Trail #610 allowing riders to loop back towards Chicken Creek or head north Lost Canyon.

Dolores River Canyon, San Juan National Forest (USFS)

    • With walls rising more than 1,500 feet above the river, Dolores River Canyon is called the "Grand Canyon of Colorado." Starting 26 miles north of Dove Creek where Colorado Route 141 intersects with County Road 13 east of the Slick Rock Bridge, this 30-mile trail connects back U.S. 141 just south of Dove Creek. Come out of the Canyon on County Road 10 and then connect with Road J to hit the highway. When planning to use this trail, it is crucial to contact the Forest Service in Dolores, just north of Cortez, to check Dolores River flows because the trail crosses the river in several places.
