Taking a train to Glacier National Park is a relaxing alternative to driving long distances or flying. There are two main options for visitors coming to Glacier, one from the west that starts in Seattle, the other that starts east of the park in Chicago.
From Seattle, visitors can climb aboard the Amtrak Empire Builder train for a six-day, five-night train trip to Glacier. The trip includes one night's accommodation in Seattle, two nights in Glacier and four nights in a sleeper train car, two on the outward journey and two on the return. It is available in July.
Visitors can also take the Amtrak Empire Builder train from Chicago for a five-day, four-night tour. Available from June through September, this tour includes two nights' accommodation in the train's sleeper car, as well as one night each in Chicago and Seattle.
Once visitors arrive in Glacier, they will fund numerous lodging options, although it's best to make an advance reservation, especially during July and August.
Glacier Park Inc. runs seven lodging options in the park, with styles to appeal to all budgets. Visitors can choose from different styles of accommodation, from the historic Glacier Park Lodge, built in 1912, which features a golf course, swimming pool and day spa, to the quaint Village Inn At Apgar, with motor inn-style rooms.
There are also two backcountry chalets that hikers can reserve for a more rustic experience.
Visitors will also find many things to do during their Glacier vacation. There are more than 700 miles of hiking trails in the park, and bikers can cruise the park's roads. There are guided horseback rides available in the park, or visitors can bring their own horses, as most of Glacier's trails are open to stock. Boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing are available in the park's lakes and rivers.
