Hagerstown is named after Jonathan Hager, a German-American who became the first neutralized citizen to occupy a seat in the Colonial Legislature. The town has a museum in his honor, the Hager Museum, with memorabilia associated with the German-American pioneer. The Schmankerl Stube restaurant honors the old Bavarian and German traditions. Schamankerl means a Bavarian culinary delicacy while Stube is a cozy room. Sekula used his personal touch to create the only restaurant that serves the Bavarian cuisine and the executive chef, Dieter Max Blosel, is from Bavaria as well.
On arrival you will be greeted by Charlie Sekula himself, or by waiters and waitresses in Bavarian dress. Outside dinning and beer drinking space is available in a spot called "Biergarten," the German word for beer garden. This is an open-air patio on which a guest can sit under a tree or umbrella. It is a popular spot between spring and fall. During busy times, the Schmankerl Stube recommends making reservations before heading to the restaurant. The reservation number is 1 (301) 797-3354. Once the reservation is made the restaurant does not hold the table longer than 15 minutes after your expected arrival.
The Schmankerl Stube's lounge serves German draft beer such as Spaten Braeu, Erdinger Weiss and Bitburgegr. They're usually served in 1/2 litre, 1 litre and 5 litre beer steins. Domestic beers and liqueurs are also available. The restaurant also caters for banquets, wedding parties and other official functions.
