Tips on Air Travel With a 1-Year Old

Traveling through the airport these days is not an easy thing. Especially if you are trying to make it through with your luggage and a child. However, if you are aware of what your baby needs, it can be an enjoyable experience. A child that is 1 year old can not communicate what is wrong or bothering them, so you must be able to understand their signs. With enough planning and preparation, you can make sure your children take to the skies with no trouble at all.
  1. Baggage

    • Check all the baggage that you can. Not only do you go through the airport security quicker, you can also get on and off the plane quicker without having to juggle the carry-on bag, the diaper bag and the baby. Make sure the diaper bag is packed with everything you will need for a full day. With delays and lost luggage, you never know what to expect. Keep extra pacifiers, juice and snack food convenient for a fussy toddler. Also, keep a few toys that do not make too much noise on hand to entertain them.

    Boarding

    • If possible, choose seats in the front row of the plane for easy boarding and leaving the plane. Often there is more room in the first row of the plane than in between rows. This will give you child the opportunity to sit on the floor in front of you and play, or at least have a little more room. Take advantage of the pre-boarding that offers you an extra few minutes to get situated. If your child is anxious, wait until the final boarding call to board the plane. This will leave the shortest amount of time between boarding and take-off for fidgety kids.

    Ear pain

    • Just like you and me, your toddler will probably experience some discomfort during the climb and the descent. Since they do not know what it is, they may be inclined to cry during this time. Keep in mind that the crying will relieve the pressure in the ear and it will pass. Other things to consider are to give them their pacifier, a lollipop or their bottle or sippy cup. The more you can get them to swallow, the sooner the pressure will regulate. Before flying with the baby, check with the doctor to make sure they do not have an ear infection.
