Refugees on Christmas Island: Zero Since 2019
Current Status: No Refugees Interned on Christmas Island
As of October 1, 2019, the Australian government officially closed the Christmas Island Immigration Detention Centre. There are zero asylum seekers or refugees currently held there.
Background
- 2001–2018: Used for offshore processing under "Pacific Solution" (Howard) and "Operation Sovereign Borders" (Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison).
- 2019: Medivac law briefly brought detainees for medical care; then centre closed.
- 2020–2023: Facility maintained on standby; used briefly for COVID quarantine (Australians repatriated from Wuhan, Diamond Princess).
Current Policy
Offshore processing now centers on Nauru and Papua New Guinea (Manus Island — largely wound down). Christmas Island remains a territorial possession but not an active detention site.
Any future use would require legislative activation and significant recommissioning.
