Locate a spot with level ground. If you set up this canopy on a downhill slope, you may find rainwater congregating under your tent.
Find a support system for your canopy. Trees offer the sturdiest support, since they're rooted. If you're in a meadow where there are no trees, look for pieces of wood scattered nearby. You can drive these into the ground, using a camp tool or cooking utensil to dig a hole. Then press the wood into the ground, using your weight to drive it down. Cover the base with dirt. This will be less sturdy than a canopy tied to a tree, but it will keep you dry.
Unfold your tarp. Thread your rope through one of the tarp's eyeholes, located at a corner of the tarp. Tie the rope to the tarp, then wind the rope around your tree or wood post. Lash the rope around a couple of times to secure it. Tie the rope in another knot, then cut it with your knife.
Repeat this process three more times with three more trees or posts to create a camp canopy that will shelter you from the rain.
