How to Visit the Air Force Academy

The mountain-side of Colorado Springs is host to the Air Force Academy. Its grand chapel is an icon that must be visited in person. The history and honor as well as pride can be felt when passing through the gates of this installation. Young men and women dressed in their blues or fatigues are amazing to watch during drills and exercises if you are lucky enough to catch site of them. Here are a few tips on how to best experience the Academy.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop and check in at the North Gate which is 14 miles north of Colorado Springs, or the South Gate which is located off Interstate 25.

    • 2

Explore the visitor center to learn about the history and operations of the Air Force and the Academy. To the right of the entrance is a small theater that shows short educational movies. And don't miss the cockpit of a fighter plane.

    • 3

Walk from the visitor center to the Cadet Chapel on the paved nature trail. The walk is downhill towards the chapel with a small slope.

    • 4

Tour both the upstairs and downstairs of the Air Force Academy Chapel. The lower level hosts the Catholic masses--the upper level is where several other denominations hold their services.

    • 5

Visit Arnold Hall and read more about the Air Force and the Academy's history while viewing aircraft memorials.

    • 6

Hike the Santa Fe trail that passes through the Academy. It has wonderful views and the air smells so clean.

    • 7

Watch the cadets march to lunch if visiting on Monday, Wednesday or Friday at noon during the academic year. Visitors can get a great view from the outside the chapel.
