First Transatlantic Telegraph: 16 Hours

A Historic Message

There was no “telegram” in the modern sense, but the first transatlantic telegraph message was sent in August 1858 via the newly laid cable. It took approximately 16 hours to transmit—mostly due to technical difficulties and low signal quality.

The cable failed weeks later; reliable service resumed in 1866.
