Essential Wild Food Survival Guide

Campers need to plan what to bring to survive in the wilderness. Survival camping requires a lot of preparation and planning. While you can survive on hunting and gathering in the wilderness, make sure to have a backup plan. Adventure and survival camping may help you connect to nature. However, a survivalist needs to vary his diet to make sure he gets proper nutrition including fat, protein, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.
  1. Fires

    • Make sure to always carry emergency matches.

In the wild, you will need to build a fire for survival. It can help you to stay warm and dry, and also allow you to cook, which is especially important if you hunt, trap or fish. Select a fire pit with care. Always carry waterproof matches with you, according to Wilderness Survival Skills. Another modern fire starting method includes artificial flint strikers.

    Plants

    • Many ferns are edible.

Check with your park officials about plant picking regulations before foraging. In her book, "The Essential Wild Food Survival Guide," Linda Runyon sets a series of rules for picking plants in the wild. Do not collect plants 200 feet from any road, avoid any plants that have been sprayed with herbicides, always familiarize yourself with dangerous plants in the area and positively identify all the plants you intend to use for food or medicine.

    Trapping

    • Meat and fish can provide enough protein for survival. Hunting requires a lot of energy and skill. Many survivalist books recommend trapping animals because it requires less skill and frees up time to search for other food sources. Look for tracks that indicate animal presence to plan where to place traps. A simple snare trap or deadfall trap may work, according to Wilderness Survival Skills.

    Fishing

    • Fish can provide protein for surviving in the wilderness.

If you camp near a stream or lake, you may fish if you have a fishing permit and the area in which you are trekking permits fishing. A multiple stream line will allow you to catch multiple fish without having to worry about watching your line, according to Off Grid Survival. Find a stream that you can easily cross and drive posts onto each side of the stream. Tie rope to each of the posts, to make a line. Attach fishing lines each with its own hook onto the rope. Check the line every couple of hours.

    Cooking

    • Bring basic equipment to cook in the wilderness. If you can’t have an open fire, bring a camp stove. Bring a pot, pan and utensils. The most important tool for wilderness survival is a knife.
