How to Plan a Road Trip From Dallas to Yellowstone National Park

A trip to Yellowstone offers a chance to relax and enjoy the many natural wonders of the park. If you plan to travel to Yellowstone from Dallas, Texas, there are other interesting sites en route that shouldn't be missed, including Mount Rushmore and the hot springs of Thermopolis, Wyoming.

      Reserve room accommodations in Goodland, Kansas, in Rapid City, South Dakota, in Thermopolis, Wyoming and in Yellowstone. These will be the stops on your trip.

      Leave Dallas at 8:00 a.m. A long day of driving awaits. Drive north on I-35. Stop for lunch in Oklahoma City then continue north to Kansas on I-35.

      Take exit 42 in Wichita to I-135 north until you get to I-70 in Salina. Stop for dinner in Salina. Take exit 95B onto I-70 west. Continue on I-70 west until you reach Goodland, Kansas. Stop and get a good night of sleep.

      Leave Goodland at 8:00 a.m. Continue west on I-70 until you get to Burlington, Colorado. Take US-385 north out of Burlington until you get to I-76. Take I-76 east until you get to I-80 where you will take I-80 west until you get to Sidney, Nebraska. Take US-385 north out of Sidney until you get to Bridgeport, Nebraska to stop for lunch.

      Continue north on US-385 out of Bridgeport, Nebraska until you reach SD Highway 79. SD Highway 79 turns into US-16T which takes you into Rapid City, South Dakota. Stop for dinner and a good night of sleep.

      Leave Rapid City at 8:00 a.m. Take Highway 16 southwest to Keystone, South Dakota where you will take Highway 244 to Mount Rushmore. Spend 2 to 3 hours at Mount Rushmore. Return to Rapid City for lunch.

      Take I-80 west out of Rapid City. When you reach US-14, take that highway west to Greybull, Wyoming. Head south on Highway 789 to Thermopolis, Wyoming for dinner and a good night of sleep.

      Wake up at 8:00 a.m. to explore the hot springs of Thermopolis. Leave at about 10:00 a.m. Take WY-120 north to Cody, Wyoming. Stop for lunch.

      Take US-14 west out of Cody. It is about a 2-hour drive to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park.
