The largest of the models produced by Jayco in 1989 was the Cardinal, which measured almost 19 feet long and 7 feet wide. This camper weighed 2260 pounds as it was delivered, slept eight people and retailed for nearly $9000 when new. Used prices as of 2010, based on condition, range from $700 to $800.
At the lowest end of the models in 1989 was the J series, which weighed only 1305 pounds, slept six and retailed for about $4500. As of 2010, its used value would range from $300 to $500. Though smaller, the J series included a portable propane cooktop, an icebox, and electric lights.
Estimated capacity for sleepers in any tent trailer may be somewhat exaggerated. A family of man, woman and small children may be perfectly comfortable sleeping in a small model, but as the children become adult-size, the space may not be adequate. Similarly, four to six adults would find it nearly impossible to sit down to dine in a small model.
Choices of options in a Jayco tent trailer were numerous when the trailer was new but additions such as a heater, a screened patio, an electric refrigerator and air conditioning would have made the trailer much more expensive. When selecting a used trailer, the buyer will want assurance that any optional equipment is functional and safe.
