How to call a cellphone in Mexico

The U.S. and Canada share a calling system; you do not have to dial a country code to call a phone within Canada. Instead, you simply dial 1 followed by the area code and number, just as you would for a domestic call. Mexico, however, is a different story. If you simply try to call a Mexican cell phone without treating it as an international call, you will be unsuccessful in reaching your intended contact.

Instructions

    • 1

Dial "011" on your phone. This number is not specific to Mexico; you must use it any time you are calling abroad.

    • 2

Enter the digits "52" on your phone. This is Mexico's country code.

    • 3

Press the "1" button on your phone. This number is only necessary when you are dialing a Mexican cellphone; leave it out for a landline. The number you have entered so far should be "011521."

    • 4

Enter the area code for your contact's cellphone. As with numbers in the U.S., the area code specifies the part of Mexico the cell phone is from. Acapulco's area code is 744, for example, and Mexico City's is 55.

    • 5

Enter your contact's Mexican phone number.
