Ferndale, Michigan, contains a large gay and lesbian population. Beginning in the 1980s, gays and lesbians began moving to the Detroit suburb. The population grew, and in 2007, Craig Covey made history by winning the Ferndale mayoral election and becoming the only openly gay mayor in the state's history. As a result of the population increase, gay bars have sprung up to meet the community's needs.
Soho bar is known for its extensive wine list and martini selection, although its slogan is "Always casual. All the time." The bar opens Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. Happy hour extends from opening until 7 p.m. on a daily basis. Each night of the week features a drink special or attraction, such as 75-cent draft beers, vodka specials and special prices on select wines. Soho also hosts karaoke and free pool nights.
