Mandje, one of the first bars that allowed openly gay people to gather socially, is located in Zeedijk, Amsterdam. Bet van Beeren, a lesbian and motorcycle riding woman bought the bar from her uncle around 1927 and ran it under her own terms allowing openly gay and lesbian people. Mandje was closed for nearly 30 years after shutting down in 1982 but recently reopened after renovation. The bar maintains its historic attitude by providing a safe social atmosphere for openly gay people to gather.
