Gay Bars in NYC

All-night dance parties with assorted DJs, drag queen shows, drink specials, musical performances ... there is no shortage of entertainment at the gay clubs of New York City. Some of these clubs have been open for more than 30 years. Many bars and clubs have a nightly theme or DJ appearance as well as special events for Halloween, New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day.
  1. G Lounge

    • The G Lounge has been in New York's Chelsea neighborhood since 1997 and is open daily from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. The lounge features a nightly happy hour from 4-9 p.m., and DJs spinning pop, R&B and house music. The club markets itself as the original gay lounge in New York City and features a wide, semi-circular window that faces 19th Street, which is meant to encourage patrons to be themselves without having to hide in windowless gay bars elsewhere in the city. The club also features Halloween, gay pride, New Year's and Valentine's Day events. An ATM is on the premises as G Lounge accepts cash only. It won the HX Awards in 2009 for Best Gay Bar in New York City.

    Splash

    • Splash is a club on 17th Street between 5th and 6th avenues. The club boasts a 2,000-square-foot dance floor, a full stage with a working shower and video displays throughout the club. Performers of note who have graced Splash's stage include Cyndi Lauper, Patti LaBelle, Britney Spears, Grace Jones and Taylor Dane. DJs from around the world spin at Splash, including Frankie Knuckles and Junior Vasquez. The club is open seven days a week from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. and each day has its own theme, such as Karaoke Tuesdays. Sunday nights at Splash feature the Sunbeam Sundays Live Stripper Contest as well as Bingo with the Stars, the classic bingo game in the bar's downstairs lounge. Happy hour is every day, excluding Sunday, from 4-9:30 p.m.

    The Monster

    • The Monster is a West Village club that has been around since 1970 and includes locations on New York's Fire Island and Key West, Florida. Live piano performances take place nightly while dancing begins at 10 p.m. The club is open Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. Besides piano playing and dancing, other nightly events include happy hour Monday through Friday from 4-9 p.m. and DJ dance parties on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Look for special events each week such as a drag queen stage show on Wednesdays that include beer specials and go-go boy dancers.

    Henrietta Hudson

    • Henrietta Hudson markets itself as the number one lesbian bar in New York City and backs it up with GONYC Magazine's Best Lesbian Bar award in 2010. It features an outdoor smoking lounge and sidewalk cafe in the spring and summer, two full bars, daily happy hour and DJs Thursdays through Saturdays. Karaoke, Latin night events and happy hour until midnight are common events. It is open from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday through Friday, 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.
