Booking too soon, such as one or two weeks in advance, tells the airlines that you have to travel, so they won't have to offer any discounts.
Compare different travel websites. Travel websites compete with one another, and one is always trying to give you a better deal than the other. You can also search the websites of airline companies, although the ticket prices typically are higher than what you'll find on travel websites.
Sign up for frequent-flier miles on the airline companies' websites before you purchase any tickets. All airlines have a frequent-flier-miles program, which awards you miles or points for each flight. When you acquire enough miles or points, you can book a free flight. If you're not sure which airline you're going to fly with, you can always sign up for frequent-flier miles with all the major airline companies.
Fill out the required information when booking your flight. Most travel websites and airline websites have an easy-to-use interface that guides you along the booking process. Double-check to make sure all the details are correct, such as your departure dates, arrival and departure cities, your name and personal information and your credit information. Your personal information must match the information on your passport or driver's license; otherwise you'll have a problem with airport security.
