How Big Can Luggage Be on a Delta Flight?

Many changes have been made to the guidelines that Delta has for carry-on and checked baggage. It is essential to know these rules before packing and heading to the airport to circumvent any unnecessary stress at check-in.
  1. Carry-on

    • As of 2010, Delta airlines allows one carry-on bag and one personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag. These are stored underneath the seat in front of you. Your carry-on bag must easily fit in the overhead luggage compartments. The bag can be no bigger than 22 by 14 by 9 inches, or 45 linear inches. Your bag should weigh 11 pounds or less.

    Checked

    • Checked luggage should weigh less than 50 pounds and be no larger than 62 inches in combined length, weight and height. Domestic flight passengers are charged $25 for the first bag and $35 for a second bag. It is possible to check additional bags; however, this is dependent on the aircraft size and the number of bags checked in by additional passengers on the flight.

    Overweight

    • You may check in bags that weigh up to 100 pounds on domestic flights for an additional fee. For luggage up to 70 pounds, you will be charged an additional $90, and bags that weigh between 70 and 100 pounds will cost you $175. If you are traveling to Europe, your bag may not weigh more than 70 pounds and will cost you an additional $150.

    Oversized

    • Bags that are larger than 115 inches total are not accepted. For bags that are 63 inches to 80 inches, an additional $175 is charged regardless of weight. Baggage up to 115 inches will cost you $300.
