How to Behave While Riding a Bus

Whether getting around town or traveling cross-country, buses can be a convenient and inexpensive mode of transportation. Here are some suggestions for appropriate behavior during your bus ride.

Instructions

    • 1

Have exact change, fare card or ticket. Bus drivers will not provide change. Asking fellow passengers for their assistance may prove to be useless and delay departure.

    • 2

Respect open-seating. Passengers are permitted to select any available seat. Do not deny use of open seats. This is considered rude behavior. Place carry-on items on your lap or under the seat. Allow disabled, elderly and pregnant passengers to use their reserved seating areas, usually located at the front and near the exits of the bus.

    • 3

Manage your children. For the safety and comfort of the children and other passengers, make sure that your children are secured and engaged in activities that do not bother other passengers. Children must be removed from strollers, and strollers should be folded and placed out of the way.

    • 4

Watch your noise level and language. Be considerate of others who do not want to overhear loud conversations, music, and video games. Always use earphones or headphones with electronic equipment. Keep sound at a low or moderately high volume.

    • 5

Respect the bus driver. Do not distract him. Ask for directions or other assistance between bus stops, and be mindful of traffic conditions. Signal the driver when you are ready to exit.

    • 6

Adhere to the rules. There are many prohibited activities including smoking, eating, and drinking. Do not place any body part outside the window. Exit through the rear door whenever possible.

    • 7

Maintain courteous behavior. Inevitably, there will be some challenges with bus travel. There may be only room to stand, irritating passengers, or schedule delays. Take it all in your stride, and relax.
