How to Take Off a Camper Canopy

Camper canopies protect you from the elements by keeping the entrance to your camper dry and shaded. Should the canopy become damaged, however, you may need to remove the canopy from the camper in order to repair it. There are two forms of canopies: ones that are built into the camper itself, and others that are attached to the outside of the camper. Removing either type of canopy is a fairly straightforward process, and the only tool you will need is a screwdriver.

Instructions

  1. Built-In Canopies

    • 1

Detach the fabric alignment screws on each side of the canopy. Pull out the canopy completely and have someone hold the canopy up in its fully extended position. Measure how far the canopy extends away from the camper, in feet. For example, 12 feet.

    • 2

Release the left upright from the camper and reduce it to the shortest possible position. Rotate the upright in the direction opposite the one indicated at the top of the upright. You must make one full rotation for each foot the canopy extends away from the camper. Using the example, you would need to rotate the upright 12 times. When you are finished, reattach the upright to the camper and repeat for the right upright.

    • 3

Grip one upright while your helper grips the other. Disconnect both uprights from the camper and walk the canopy away from the camper.

    Attached Canopies

    • 4

Locate the mounting brackets on the side of the camper. There should be one bracket at each end of the canopy and one in the center, equidistant from the two end brackets.

    • 5

Detach the screws holding the mounting brackets in place while your helper supports the canopy. Set the screws aside for reassembly later.

    • 6

Remove the canopy from the side of the camper once all of the mounting brackets have been taken out.
