Roadtrek Canoe Carrying Options

The roof design of the Roadtrek RV creates a challenge for people who want to transport something on top of a vehicle. Carrying a canoe can be especially challenging, because most racks aren't built to accommodate the Roadtrek's raised roof. But you have some options that will make transportation relatively easy.
  1. Roof Racks

    • Yakima and Thule both offer roof racks that work on a Roadtrek RV. The Roadtrek's roof shape makes installation more difficult, but not impossible. Rather than ordering a rack online, you'll get better results if you go to a store that sells them, where you can get help choosing and installing the rack. Installation will require some custom fitting. Standard racks will work on certain Roadtrek models, but installation may require you to drill holes into the roof.

    Trailers

    • A trailer is the simplest solution for transporting a canoe. It can also be the most expensive. Canoe trailer prices range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. They attach to the hitch on the back of the RV. Canoes are easy to load and unload, and installation of the trailer is simple as well. In addition, you won't have the added wind resistance caused by carrying a canoe on top of your car. Yakima, CastleCraft and Malone are three well-known and trusted canoe trailer manufacturers.

Canoe trailer prices range from about $200 to more than $3,500 for trailers that carry multiple canoes. If you purchase a larger trailer, make sure it has tail lights. Larger trailers are required to have tail lights, and are typically outfitted with a cable that plugs into a special outlet at the back of the vehicle to power the trailer's lights.

    Foam Block Kits

    • Foam blocks are another option for carrying a canoe on a Roadtrek RV. Riverside and DRD Corp. are two companies that offer foam blocks and rack systems. The benefit of foam blocks is that you can place them exactly where you need them, and where they'll fit. There's no metal frame or railing to contend with. Foam blocks have slits in the top and bottom. The bottom slit is used to fit the block onto roof racks, but the block can be used on bare roofs as well. The top slit is used to secure the canoe.

A foam block kit is the cheapest way to transport a canoe. You can purchase a pair of blocks for as little as $10. A complete kit, with four blocks, "S" hooks, and straps is available from manufacturers like Malone for about $30.
