Do it Yourself RV Awning Repair

An RV awning can make a pleasant camping weekend much more enjoyable by offering shelter, an outdoor cooking area and a place outside to comfortably relax. However, an awning can be much more fragile than the rest of your RV. An unchecked tear or hole in an RV awning can grow substantially, so it is best to repair it quickly.
  1. Supplies

    • Assemble a kit so you will have one ready when you need to fix your awning. Your RV dealer should be able to sell you some matching awning material, but if the dealer cannot, the manufacturer can. Many RV supply stores sell an awning patch kit, but they usually feature waterproof tape, which only offers a temporary fix. This should be used for on-the-road emergencies only. It is recommended that you repair the awning, not just cover it up. In addition to the awning material, you need waterproof fabric glue (Gorilla brand is a good choice), scissors, bleach, a sponge and a bucket.

    Preparation

    • Remove the awning to work on it. You do not have to disassemble it, just take it off the side of your RV and lay the awning out. Clean both sides of the hole with a sponge and a gentle bleach solution (20 parts water to one part bleach). If the hole or tear was created by mildew, and it was not all removed by the cleaning, cut away the mildewed area or else it will spread. Wait at least one hour for it to dry before proceeding.

    Repairing

    • Cut a patch that is at least an inch bigger than the hole for each side. Paint the edges of one side with glue and apply it to the hole. Apply glue from the under side of the awning to make sure the patch is completely secure and waterproof. Again, allow this to dry before proceeding. Once it is dry, you can reattach the awning to your RV and use it normally.
