Decide on your route: this will determine the type of ticket you will purchase. Learn which type of train serves the areas to which you choose to travel.
Use the Rail Pass if you are going to travel to several destinations within a month.
Decide which class of ticket to buy. Look for a first class seats if you want a more comfortable ride; TGV trains have the highest level of service in both first and second class.
Buy your ticket. Book it up to 90 days in advance online on one of the French rail websites or buy one at the station, either at the ticket counter or from a self-service station.
Look on the overhead boards or TV monitors to see the departures. Look for your destination city, the time of departure time, in military time and the departure gate, which will appear on the board 20 minutes before departure.
Read your ticket to determine the class, car and seat number. Find this information in the middle of your ticket.
Look for the digital screen next to each car of the train to find the coach number.
Validate your ticket immediately before you board. Look for a yellow machine with SNCF on it, usually near the tracks to insert your ticket for validation
Carry your own luggage on board. Place bags on the racks at the end of the cars or the overhead bins.
Be prepared to show your ticket and passport to the Train Manager. Advise the Train Manager before the train leaves if you are missing any documents.
Purchase food and wine from the on-board catering service or bring your own.
