How to Make Train Reservations

Train reservations in the United States are usually made only for long-distance travel on Amtrak. Smaller commuter trains usually do not require a reservation, though passes are available to purchase in advance. You may be able to buy tickets at the Amtrak station the day of your trip, but you can get better rates by planning ahead and taking advantage of special offers and discounts. The best place to begin your reservation process is the Amtrak website.

Plan ahead to save money. You can often save by booking in advance, rather than buying tickets at the station. You can also save by checking for tour packages and specials. (See Resources.) Also, check for discounts for passenger types. Children, students, veterans, AAA members, seniors and active military members are eligible for discounts.

Purchase tickets once you have established your route, dates and other details of your trip. You can make the reservation and purchase tickets online (see Resources) with a credit or debit card, or by phone or mobile device, or at the station. To make reservations by phone, call 1-800-872-7245. At larger stations, you can use the Quik-Trak kiosk, a machine that sells tickets.

Obtain your tickets if you ordered online or by phone. You can receive your tickets by mail or pick them up at the station on the day of your trip. If your station has a Quik-Trak kiosk, you can use your credit card and reservation number to print out the tickets.
