How do I Operate a Moped or Scooter?

Mopeds and scooters offer a lower learning curve to operate than their larger, more complex cousin: the motorcycle. Thanks to the use of a gearless CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), most scooters can be ridden without having to learn the counter-intuitive task of shifting between gears as you increase your speed. This is part of the attraction for many scooter riders, making the act of riding a scooter a simple twist-and-go affair. While riding a scooter or moped will take some getting used to, you should be able to get on the road with some practice.

    • 2

Take note of the control switches and levers on both sides of the handlebars. The right handlebar contains the throttle twist grip, front brake lever, starter button and the run/stop switch. The left handlebar contains the turn signal switch, headlight dimmer switch and the horn button.

    • 3

Turn on the scooter, using the ignition key. Switch the run/stop switch on the right handlebar to the run position, using your right thumb.

    Accelerating and Braking

    • 6

Accelerate slowly, using your right hand to twist the throttle twist grip toward you slightly.

    • 7

Increase speed, using your right hand to roll the twist grip back farther. Decelerate, using your right hand to roll the twist grip forward. Roll the twist grip forward completely to coast.

    • 8

Slow down using either front or rear brake levers, using your fingers to steadily pull the selected brake lever in toward the handlebar. Use the front brake to slow down in most cases. Stop, using both the front and rear brakes simultaneously. Release the brake lever to continue on your way.

    Turning

Turn the handlebars in the direction of the turn if you are traveling at a low speed (below 10 mph). For example, pull the left handlebar toward you if you are turning left. Push the handlebar away from the direction of the turn to counter-steer if you are traveling at a higher speed. For example, push the left handlebar away from you if your are turning left.

    • 12

Twist the throttle open, using your right hand, as you complete the turn. Push the turn signal switch to its center position, using your left thumb, to deactivate the turn signals.

    • 14

Pull in the front and rear brake levers to come to a complete stop.

    • 15

Lower the scooter's kickstand, using your left heel. Lower the scooter onto the kickstand.

    • 16

Switch the run/stop switch on the right handlebar to the stop position, using your right thumb.

    • 17
