Latvia's Vegetation Zone: Temperate Broadleaf and Mixed Forest
Latvia lies entirely within the temperate broadleaf and mixed forest biome (WWF PA0422 / European-Siberian region), a transitional zone between boreal coniferous forests to the north and temperate deciduous forests to the south.
Climate Drivers
- Latitude: 55.5°–58°N — same as southern Alaska, Moscow, Edinburgh.
- Maritime influence: Baltic Sea moderates winters (Jan avg −3°C to −7°C) and cools summers (Jul avg +16°C to +18°C).
- Precipitation: 600–700 mm/year, evenly distributed; snow cover 80–100 days.
Forest Composition
Forests cover 52% of Latvia (3.4M ha; 4th highest in EU). Natural composition:
- Coniferous (50%): Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) — dry, sandy soils; Norway spruce (Picea abies) — moist, fertile.
- Broadleaf (30%): Silver birch (Betula pendula), downy birch (B. pubescens), aspen (Populus tremula), gray alder (Alnus incana), black alder (A. glutinosa).
- Mixed stands (20%): Pine/spruce with birch/aspen/alder — ecotonal richness.
- Noble broadleaves (<5%): Oak (Quercus robur), maple (Acer platanoides), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), linden (Tilia cordata), elm (Ulmus glabra) — southern/western Latvia, richer soils.
Understory and Non-Forest Vegetation
- Ground layer: Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), lingonberry (V. vitis-idaea), mosses (Pleurozium, Hylocomium), ferns (Dryopteris).
- Mires/bogs (10% of land): Raised bogs (Sphagnum, cotton grass, cranberry, sundews), fens (sedges, reeds).
- Meadows (semi-natural): 0.7M ha; orchids, globeflower, grasses — maintained by mowing/grazing.
- Coastal: Dunes (marram grass, sea buckthorn), saline meadows.
Human Impact and Conservation
- Intensive forestry (clearcut, replant) dominates; old-growth <2%.
- Protected: 4 national parks (Gauja, Ķemeri, Slītere, Rāzna), 260+ nature reserves, 335 Natura 2000 sites (12% land).
- Climate change: Pine retreat northward; oak, beech, hornbeam expanding; bark beetle outbreaks increasing.
