Alabama's Legal Sleeping Arrangements for Children

Alabama law requires children under 18 to have a "safe and suitable" sleeping arrangement:

  • Age/size-appropriate bed or crib (no adult beds for infants).
  • Hazard-free area: no exposed wiring, sharp objects, unsecured windows, heavy furniture tip risks.
  • Supervision for under 6: Adult must be in same room or immediate proximity during sleep.

Exceptions: 16+ may sleep alone with parental permission; licensed daycare/foster homes follow their own regulations. Violations can lead to fines, custody intervention, or criminal charges if neglect is proven. Rules aim to prevent SIDS, falls, entrapment, fire deaths.
