Traditional Overnight Summer Camps for Teenagers

These days there are a wide variety of summer camps available for teens, from cheer-leading camps to soccer camps, adventure camps and computer camps. But when you hear the words "summer camp" a traditional camp is usually what comes to mind, complete with bunkhouses, horseshoe pits, riding stables and swimming pools. Fortunately there are still many traditional summer camps all over the United States for children to attend well up into their teenage years.

    • Camp Hilltop (camphilltop.com) is located on 100 beautiful acres in upstate New York and offers a traditional summer camp for kids up to age 16, in two to eight week sessions. Campers can participate in a variety of traditional camping activities such as swimming, kayaking, horseback riding, archery and fishing, in addition to some unique activities such as the scuba program, water skiing, martial arts and mountain biking.

    Mountain Meadow Ranch

    • Mountain Meadow Ranch, (mountainmeadow.com) located north of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is a 900 acre family owned ranch and summer camp for children up to age 17. Campers can enjoy traditional camp activities such as archery, arts and crafts, fishing, horseback riding and swimming in addition to other activities such as photography, tennis, mountain biking, fencing and ceramics. Regularly scheduled events include talent shows, color wars, campfires, plays and dances. For those campers really looking for a little adventure, Mountain Meadow Ranch also offers a ropes course, an 800-foot long zip line, summit expeditions, archeology expeditions, lizard hunts and backpacking trips.

    Camp Huawni

    • Camp Huawni (camphuawni.com) is a co-ed summer camp for children up to age 16 that offers both one and two week sessions. Located in the pristine pine forests of beautiful Eastern Texas, the camp facilities feature large cabins with spacious double bed bunk beds, a large dining hall, bathhouse facilities with hot and cold water and 24-hour medical facilities. Campers can enjoy a wide array of traditional camping activities such as swimming, fishing, hiking, canoeing, archery, soccer, horseshoes, arts and crafts, volleyball and basketball. Other non-traditional activities are also available such as whiffleball, water trolley, frisbee golf and para-sailing.
