Use a printed campground guide or a camping website to locate several viable possibilities near your destination. Woodall's and Frommer's publish hard-copy campground guides. KOA, Go Camping America and All Campgrounds are some of the sites that offer comprehensive lists of campgrounds nationwide.
Choose two or three campgrounds, and compare amenities, pricing, nearby attractions and any other items you require. Check to see if sites are available for tents and/or recreational vehicles. Look for electrical hookups, swimming pools, playgrounds, picnic tables, water sources and other preferred items.
Check the campground map to scout out sites that fit your needs. Many campground websites and guides offer maps of individual campgrounds. Consider whether you want a secluded, wooded location or a spot near amenities and conveniences.
Reserve your campsite online or by telephone, and pay with a credit card to secure your spot. Request a confirmation number if you reserve by telephone, or print out a confirmation sheet when booking online. Take your confirmation with you when checking in just in case there's a problem with your reservation.
