Campgrounds in Southeast Minnesota

Home to small towns like Houston, Caledonia and Preston, southeastern Minnesota has a variety of attractions for tourists, such as Lake Louise and Great River Bluffs State Parks, and annual events including Bluegrass Festival and the Houston County Fair. Among the accommodations available for visitors to the region, sometimes called Bluff Country, are a number of public and private campgrounds. These facilities offer sites for recreational vehicles and tents, while providing amenities and activities that allow Southeast Minnesota visitors to enjoy a camping vacation with some of the comforts of home.
  1. Money Creek Haven, Inc., Campground

    • In addition to its lodge accommodations and five cabins, Money Creek Haven, Inc., Campground in Houston offers 15 sites for tent camping, which offer no electricity or other hookups. The campground also features 205 recreational vehicle campsites, approximately 85 of which are available for short-term rental by vacationers. Fourteen of these short-term sites are pull-throughs measuring 55 feet by 55 feet in size, while the remaining back-ins are 45 feet by 40 feet. Sixty-six sites have full electric, water and sewage hookups, and the others provide electric and water connections. Wireless Internet is accessible near the campground's office. On-site amenities include restrooms, showers, a waste dump and laundry facilities. The campground sells firewood on-site. A pond on the property is available for fishing, and the campground also has an in-ground pool, horseshoe pits, a game room, a playground, a volleyball court and trails for hiking and cycling. The campground is also less than six miles from one of Houston's most popular attractions, the Houston Nature Center.

    DunRomin' Park

    • Located in Caledonia, DunRomin' Park consists of 15 tent-camping sites and 91 recreational vehicle spots, 47 of which are available for short-term rentals. The campsites are back-ins, measuring 25 feet by 40 feet in size. All sites have electric and water hookups. No sewage connections are available, but the park has both a waste dump station and mobile sewer service. Free Wireless Internet access is available around the campground's office. The campground has restrooms, showers and public telephones and operates a small store that sells groceries, propane and firewood. Winnebago Creek flows through the park for freshwater fishing. Also on the property are a heated swimming pool, horseshoe pits and a game room. Children can enjoy daily activities for kids and hayrides while staying at the campground. DunRomin' Park promotes green camping, using environmentally friendly pool-cleaning chemicals, offering recycling stations throughout the park and providing healthy and organic snacks for guests. The campground is less than five miles from MaCal Grove Golf Course and less than eight miles from the site of the annual Houston County Fair. DunRomin' Park is open from early May through the end of September.

    Forrestville-Mystery Cave State Park

    • A public facility operated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Forrestville-Mystery Cave State Park is in Preston. The campground features 60 tent-camping sites intended for access on horseback, and 24 of these spaces have electricity available for campers. Also on the property are two group camping sites for groups of up to 50 people and 73 recreational vehicle campsites. Each RV site can accommodate vehicles up to 50 feet in length, and 23 of the sites offer electric hookups. The campground is open all year, but amenities like the flush toilets, showers and waste dump are available only from mid-April through mid-October. The park does have some vault toilets open year-round. The park has 17 miles of hiking trails and 15 miles of trails for horseback-riding as well as trails for cross country skiing, skate-skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The South Branch Root River allows for freshwater fishing on-site. Visitors to the park can also participate in a guided tour of Mystery Cave, an underground area on the park property. The state of Minnesota imposes a 14-day maximum length on all stays at the park.
